In this image, the artist seeks to reveal the love between mother and child. More specifically, the love between the Christ Child and His Blessed Mother, who says “yes” to God in her fiat statement. In Luke’s Gospel, The Blessed Virgin offers an answer to the Angel Gabriel, who delivers astonishing news that she will bear a son, and He will be the Christ Child. To this, Mary proclaims: “Be it done unto me according to thy word.” This action paves the way for the Incarnation to occur. God is a gentleman. He awaits our “yes,” as we surrender to His holy will.
