Our Lady of Guadalupe

Our Lady of Guadalupe

In the year 1531, Mary, the mother of God appeared to Juan Diego, an Aztec native. During this period in history, human sacrifice was common, to appease pagan gods. In particular, infants were the unfortunate victims of this period.
Mary appeared to Juan Diego, a new convert to Christianity, as a sign of encouragement to the Aztec people, offering faith and hope to the oppressed.
She asked Juan Diego to meet with the Bishop, and asked him to build a church. As a sign, Mary told Juan Diego to gather the roses, which were blooming in the middle of winter, and place them in his Tilma (cloak). He did so, presenting the roses he gathered to the Bishop by opening his Tilma. As the roses fell to the floor, the Tilma was transformed, and the beautiful image of Our Lady of Guadalupe miraculously appeared on the Tilma.
This image is on display today in the Basilica in Mexico City, which was built in her name. The image has been tested with the most modern techniques available today, yet no one has been able to explain how the image appeared on the Tilma, and no human means of applying the image to the fabric of the Tilma was used. Our Lady’s image appears as a pregnant Aztec maiden, with images significant to the natives of that day. Her image eclipses the sun god to which their infants were sacrificed; astronomers have proven that the stars in her mantle exactly replicate the formation of heavenly constellations on the precise day she appeared. It is interesting to note that blood sacrifices within the Aztec culture ceased upon the appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe. She is to this day, the Patroness of the Americas, and the Patroness of Life.
