St. Teresa of Avila

St. Teresa of Avila

St. Teresa of Avila was born in the year 1515 in the Spanish Province of Avila.

In 1562, she became the foundress of the Roman Catholic order of Discalced Carmelites.  Teresa embraced and encouraged a life of austerity, and commitment to God.  As a mystic, she believed in living a life of complete service to Christ, in loving and serving humanity to the very best of her ability.  The nuns of her order were encouraged to forsake all worldly notions to follow Christ.   Teresa authored several books in her time, under the direction of her Bishop.  Some of her better known writings are “The Interior Castle” and “The Way of Perfection” which assist one in spiritual development of the interior life.  For many, St. Teresa represents a model of how one can find unity with Christ, as they navigate through the struggles which are presented each day.  St. Teresa was cannonized March 12, 1622, and was named “Doctor of the Church” in 1970.

Description

Teresa of Avila’s Prayer

Let nothing disturb thee,
Nothing affright thee;
All thing are passing;
God never changeth;
Patient endurance
Attaineth to all things;
Who God possesseth
In nothing is wanting
Alone God sufficeth.
