Theotokos

Theotokos literally translated from the Greek, means

“Mother of God.”  Icons, for centuries have presented Mary, as the Mother of God.  This particular icon has a modern style, which is somewhat reminiscent of Our Lady of Czetochowa, also known as the “Black Madonna” of Poland, which tradition indicates as being painted by St. Luke.  The original image of the Black Madonna suffered attack during an aggressive Hussit era attack.  It is said a soldier entered the sanctuary where this image was displayed, placing 3 slashes on the Madonna’s lovely face.  The attacker fell dead, as he placed the third blow upon her image.
